Hjordis Termesden the recently divorced and popular Swedish model, was only 27 years old when she first met David Niven on the set of Bonnie Prince Charlie. Hjordis used his chair whilst he was off the set and David's initial aggravation soon turned to delight when he set eyes on Hjordis for the first time. In his book The Moon's a Balloon he describes this meeting by stating "I had never seen anything so beautiful in my life - tall, slim, auburn hair, uptilted nose, lovely mouth and the most enormous grey eyes I had ever seen." After an intense and short courtship, David made Hjordis wife number two in only 10 days on 14th January 1948 at Kensington & Chelsea Registry Office. Shortly after the filming had commenced Hjordis, David and the boys returned to Hollywood where she slowly adjusted to the changes and they fell even more deeply in love. David was very fortunate of his unbelievable luck in being blissfully happy for the second time in his life. This was a difficult time in David's life, his relationship with Samuel Goldwyn was faltering, his movie career was on a downturn and they were struggling for money, however Hjordis supported David entirely. It was at this point in their lives that they returned to Wiltshire, England for a year before returning to the USA. In the summer of 1959 there were marital problems, Hjordis had left David to live by herself but it was during the filming of Please Don't Eat the Daises that she realised how much she missed him and returned. Within months of this reconciliation David, Hjordis and the boys moved to Switzerland where they adopted their first daughter and everyone was very happy, especially Hjordis. This was followed by another daughter and a second home in Cap Ferrat, France. Sadly due to David's demise, Hjordis would attend his funeral on 3rd August 1983 at the local cemetery in Switzerland. Sadly Hjordis herself passed away on 24th December 1997. |
